History of World Water Day

World Water Day is a worldwide recognition and a chance to take in more about water-related issues, to be motivated to tell others and take action to make a difference. World Water Day goes back to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro where an international observance for fresh water was recommended. The United Nations General Assembly reacted by assigning March 22, 1993, as the first World Water Day. It has been held every year since then. The theme for World Water Day 2018 is Nature for Water” – or “Nature-based Solutions for Water” to explore the results of the challenges that we faced in the 21st century.

Importance of World Water Day

Water is said to have played a key role in presence of life on earth.

With two-thirds of the earth’s surface covered by water and the human body consisting of 75 percent of it, it is evidently clear that water is one of the prime elements responsible for life on earth. We cannot imagine life on earth without water. The soil, with no water in it and nothing to grow on it, would be lifeless, dead, collapsed into dust, sand, clay or rock.
In fact, the climate of the earth is controlled by seas. Water cools the earth when it heats up and warms it when it cools down. At the point when the temperature drops sufficiently low, water freezes, releasing its own heat and warming the freezing air. At the point When the temperature rises high enough, water evaporates, taking some of the heat with it and cooling the hot air.

Why do we celebrate world water day?

Water is an important source for a healthy body. This is why UN General Assembly decided to call attention towards the water-related challenges.
Including the UN member states and agencies, various NGOs and non-government organizations also become involved in the promotion activities of clean water conservation to aware the public.  All the serious issues of water are highlighted during this event and campaign to promote the supply of clean and purified water.

The few reasons behind celebrating World Water Day are:

  • Avoid wasting water.
  • Always close the tap after use.
  • Prefer using clean and purified water.
  • Every year, the day highlights a specific aspect of water.
  • The Theme of World Water Day 2018 is“Nature for Water” or “Nature-based Solutions for Water”– to explore the results of the challenges that we faced in the 21st century.

Therefore, now the time has come to take steps forward and join together to preserve our valuable natural resources.

Save Water, Save Life!
